Staring into the window of your fave café lusting over that £5 matcha latté…yet fighting with inner yourself knowing you can’t dare to spend another penny, as the numbers of all the hot treats you’ve bought start to rack up in your mind? You start wondering how to make a matcha latte at home.
Me too. As much as I love latté’s, my bank knows coffee shops are like thieves in the night. After going round a friend’s house and being served a barista style frothy latté, I was inspired by her Smeg coffee machine. But that was an investment I couldn’t afford to make.
Hot drinks are part of my daily rituals – morning, lunch, before bedtime… but matcha latte’s were missing from the ceremony. I thought that I could surely re-create a barista-style matcha latté if I had the right tools. If you want to get more bang for your buck, look no further. Ya girl cracked the code of how to make matcha latte – homestyle.
I fancied fancier and frothier steaming cups. It sprung to mind that I had heard of handheld frother’s before- not that I’d ever actually seen anyone use one, but still, I was willing to explore.
What You Need For Homemade Matcha Latté Making
So, I debated whether to buy the 4-star rated £5 hand frother or a £13 4.5-star rated frother after reading the reviews. If you’re interested, I’ve linked the cheaper one here and the one I got here. There are honestly tonnes of options. In the end, I decided to go for the slightly more upscale one for £13, in the hope that it’ll last longer and build me a fluffy mountain of milk froth.

The verdict? Definitely one of my best purchases in 2025. Let’s just say, I got it around a month ago and I have used it almost daily. It still hasn’t needed to be charged!
What’s the catch? Well, it’s pretty powerful and can cause some splashes, but easy to get used to.
An extra bonus is that the frother is small enough to transport around with you, so you might just become the workplace barista like I have found myself. So how do you make a matcha latte?
The Perfect Matcha Latté Recipe

Here’s my process for manifesting the perfect homemade matcha latté.
- Boil the kettle
- Pour some milk into your fave mug (Tip: ‚barista’ labelled oat milk froths the best)
- This step might sound weird, but: Heat up the milk in the mug in the microwave for 20-40 seconds. (Tip: It depends on how much milk you have and the wattage of your microwave. More milk equals more time, and the higher the wattage, the less time it needs). If the idea of microwaving milk isn’t your thing, you can warm it up on the stove… But it really doesn’t matter, we’re just trying to get the milk to an optimal frothing temperature of around 60 degrees delicious- I mean- Celsius…
- In a separate mug, spoon in your favourite matcha. (Tip: As traditional matcha keeps me up at night, I opt for caffeine free Kawa matcha made from mulberry leaf powder.
If you’re jittery with caffeine like me, you might find my blog post on coffee alternatives (eek – mushroom coffee!) helpful. Especially if you suffer with acid reflux, I’ve got a whole separate post on just-as-good coffee alternatives for that – giving you even more hot drinks to experiment with your frother). BUT, if you’re a caffeine lover, I also have you covered about the best times of day to sip on your matcha for maximum benefits in my blog post here. As it turns out, timing counts for a lot.

- It’s important to use a seperate mug because if you frothed the milk and matcha together, the froth will collapse.
- Pour hot water in your mug with the matcha and stir in. Make sure it isn’t boiling, in order to not ‘burn’ your goods.

- Once your milk is warm enough, froth it up with your frother. Do this for around 5-20 seconds till it looks light and airy to your liking.
- Pour your matcha mix into your frothed milk and stir it up!
- Finish with a teaspoon of delicious vanilla syrup. I scoured Amazon hard to find the best value yet best rated syrup… I can vouch that it is delicious.

E Viola! I rest my case. The pictures say it all.

Seriously, I don’t get why more people don’t do this! With so many syrups available to buy online, I feel like we can make our go-to order a reality. I’ve never been a fan of the grassy taste of matcha. However, I can vouch that the recipe here will have you coming in for more and more sips. All the better when the entire health hype of matcha has shown us all of the research benefits it has for mind and body. All from the comfort of our home without the spenniness.
